5 DIFFERENCES BETWEEN RESEARCH PAPER & REVIEW PAPER

What is its purpose?

Research Paper: Its primary purpose is to conduct and report an in-depth original research study, presenting the authors’ unique investigation of a specific research question.
Review Paper: Its purpose is to critically analyze previously published literature on a specific topic.

What is it based on?

Research Paper: It relies on original research conducted by the paper’s authors, often referred to as primary literature.
Review Paper: It is based on existing articles and does not involve original research; this is termed secondary literature

How is it written?

Research Paper: Authors formulate the research question, collect raw data, and conduct the original study, followed by writing the paper based on data analysis and interpretation.

Review Paper: Authors select a specific research topic and summarize existing literature on that topic.

What does it report?

Research Paper: It reports each step of the study in detail, covering abstract, hypothesis, background study, methodology, results, interpretation, implications, contribution to existing literature, and suggestions for future research.

Review Paper: It identifies and reports commonalities between the results of selected studies, addressing any discrepancies by providing reasons for conflicting results. It also analyzes available information from published work and reports any problems or gaps in the existing literature.

How long it should be?

Research Paper: The length depends on the word count specified by the journal, typically ranging from 3,000 to 6,000 words and occasionally up to 12,000 words.

Review Paper: Review papers typically have word limits ranging from 3,000 to 5,000 words, but some journals may allow longer or shorter review papers depending on their guidelines
